Basement Designs for Low Ceilings

When designing your basement, the ceiling height can play a large factor, especially when the ceiling is low. Basements with low ceilings pose some design problems. To begin with, the area can easily start to take on the appearance of a cave. Much like vaulted ceilings make an area feel larger than it is; the amount of space may appear much smaller because of low ceiling height. Here are a few basement designs for low ceilings.

There are a few things that can be done to open the area and help to keep your basement from resembling a cave. One easy way is the use of light. If you have low ceilings you should work on opening up the area and making it lighter and brighter. Upward light will give the basement a larger appearance. Table and floor lamps do a great job of brightening up the space and making it appear larger.

Wall sconces can help if they are installed correctly. You should be careful when choosing installation height. These need to aim the light at the ceiling to open up the area. Since they shine upwards, you do not want them aimed just under your eye level, obviously, because that would be irritating. A wall sconce should be at a height that will place the light above your eye level. If the ceiling is too low to accommodate this then sconces shouldnt be installed.

Fluorescent lighting can make a basement appear dimmer and more cave like and should be avoided. Recessed lighting within the ceiling draws attention to the low ceiling and makes the area appear more confined.

Where possible, you will want to open the area up and make it appear more spacious to make up for the low ceiling. A more open look with furniture being placed around the perimeter instead of placing furnishings in the middle of the room gives a more spacious appearance. Small cozy groupings of furniture in the corners work well for recreation rooms. Any arrangement that will leave the center of the floor open, allowing guests to easily scan the rooms contents, will give it a larger appearance and make up for the low ceiling.

Dark paint will not go well with the low ceiling. You should choose a light color for your walls. Where possible, windows are another area that should be taken advantage of as much as possible. Use light window treatments that do not smother the light or block the window from view. Window treatments could include stationary draperies and a valance to dress the window without covering it up. If needed for privacy, mini blinds can be installed.

Mirrors can open up a basement and make it look like there is more space. Placing mirrors on the wall gives the appearance of increased depth to a room. Placing mirrors on opposite sides of the room, so that the image of one mirror appears in the other, draws your eyes from the ceiling and gives a never ending look to the room.

Avoid hanging anything from the ceiling. This will draw attention to the low ceiling and make the area appear much smaller and more confined. You do not want to hang lights from your ceiling either, not only will they draw attention to the low ceiling but you may bump your head on them.

The Statue of Liberty

Carnegie Hall

Age is Just a Number

I started my steel stud career back when Disco ruled the airwaves and the Cold War was in full swing.

I was told about a possible job opportunity by a friend of mine who was vacating his position to begin a stint in the military. He said I could take his place if I wanted. All I had to do was show up at the jobsite. As it was summer and I wasn't in school I figured I would go earn a few bucks and stay busy for a couple of months.

When I showed up at the appointed place and time I found myself in front of an eight story high rise apartment building on the outskirts of Miami. I climbed to the third floor, met the boss who handed me a screwgun and was told to screw off the bottoms of all the studs on that floor. This consisted of thirty-six apartments with several hundred steel studs each. I'll let you do the math. After a week of bending over pushing screws I had finally reached the last apartment and was overcome with a sense of elation knowing that my personal Hell had come to an end. I hurried upstairs to tell the boss I was finished and to accept what I was sure would be much back slapping and congratulations only to discover another floor full of steel studs awaiting me. Meanwhile the framing crew had already moved up to the next floor and were half way done with it.

Thus began my three decade love affair with steel studs.

Diamonds in the Rough

Just as steel is tempered in fire and diamonds are created under extreme heat and pressure so too are true craftsmen forged in the flames of experience. These were the days of piece work framing when you got paid on a production basis. Prices were by the lineal foot and if you weren't pushing screws you weren't getting paid. The more you could produce in an hour the more money you made. This was just the opposite of the hourly mindset of today where the less you have to do to earn your hourly wage the better.

Time was money and quality was of paramount importance because if you had to go back to fix something you did it on your dime. Now days if a guy has to go back and fix his own work he looks at it as job security. My, how times have changed.

So know that this is the first of many articles explaining what can be done with steel studs. My main intention today is for you to understand that I am a steel stud framer; I don't just play one on T.V.

The world is full of many talented steel stud framers and I have had the privilege of calling many of them friend. Unfortunately for people seeking information on the Internet, none of these spectacular individuals has created a website.

Don't Rush When You Install Ceramic Wall Tile in Your Bathroom

It's not that difficult to customize and install ceramic wall tile in your bathroom. A little patience and dedication will get you a long way when installing that dream ceramic tile bathroom wall you've always wanted to have.

Before you begin to install ceramic wall tile, get your tiling tools together. You will need the following tools for this project: A tape measure, a tile cutter and a pair of tile nippers and a pair of pliers, tile spacers, sandpaper, a trowel (preferably notched) and a rubber grout float. To install ceramic wall tile on your bathroom walls properly, you will also need a strong setting material like tiling thinset mortar, or any of a wide selection of tile adhesives. You will also need tiling grout for filling in the gaps between your tiles. Make sure to match your setting material color with your grout.

A bucket, rags and sponges will also be needed for cleaning your tiles of excess grout and other debris, after you're all done. And don't start to install ceramic wall tile without these essentials: You will also need a pair of safety glasses, heavy leather gloves, and long-sleeved work clothes (broken shards, and other debris can cause nasty cuts, if you are not careful). Ready to start on your dream ceramic bathroom wall? Follow the tiling instructions below and make your ceramic tiled bathroom wall and start tiling!

You can begin by finding the center of your wall. Use a carpenter's level, or long pieces of plumb to mark intersecting vertical and horizontal lines. These will be your reference lines for your tiling work. Where both lines intersect is the starting point for your first row of ceramic tiles. From that point, you may then be able to working your way to both ends of your bathroom wall. Make regular checks when you install ceramic wall tile, so that your tiling work is consistent and does run up or down in a slanting direction.

There are two types of bathroom walls you may be working on. One is the common concrete wall, and the other is a special type of called a green drywall. A green drywall is specifically designed for use in bathrooms and showers because it is designed to resist moisture intrusion. Be sure that you clean your walls of dust and debris, as well as repair cracks and fill in gaps and holes. Roughen up or scarify your wall so that your tiling mortar has some grip for bonding. That way, when you begin to install ceramic wall tile on your walls, you won't have a problem with your tiling mortar or bonding material.

You may now start installing ceramic wall tile once the walls are laid out. Start at your reference lines' intersection point. Apply a coat of tiling thinset mortar. Place your tile over it and press the tile down firmly in place. Give it a twisting motion to set it in place. Stop pressing when you feel your tile has set and is no longer wobbly. Duplicate this procedure with the rest of your ceramic tiles. To get a consistent tiling, place tile spacers on all the spaces between your ceramic bathroom tiles. Don't forget to check your work every now and then.

You may not need to use the entire tile as you finish up the end of the row. Use a tile cutter to get your tile under the right size. Then, smoothen the cut edge with sandpaper. Be careful: The edge of a cut ceramic bathroom tile is very sharp. For irregular, use your tile nippers. First draw an outline of the irregular and etch a line along it. Then, use your tile nipper to break off the unuseable edges, until you have required shape. Do this a little at a time, so you can control your tile nipping. Don't forget to sand the edges over.

Once you're done tiling the bathroom wall, leave it to set, overnight, at the very least, or twenty-four hours, at the most. After this setting period, it's time to lay in your grout. There are two main kinds of grout: Sanded or unsanded grout. Sanded grout is a mixture of cement, water and fine sand. Unsanded grout is any of a wide selection of polymer-based and epoxy resin adhesive grout used to install ceramic wall tile. If your tile spaces are more than an eighth of an inch wide, use sanded grout. For smaller tile spaces, use unsanded grout. Start by map out your bathroom wall and work one section at a time. To maximize your grout application, angle your rubber grout float and press down firmly as you spread it over the tile spaces. Check for pockets of air. Dab these spaces with more grout lining by using the edges of your grout float. Use a damp sponge to wipe off any excess grout. Rinse your sponge regularly so you can get a cleaner and better finish. Let your grout dry for a day and then take a dry piece of cloth and clean and buff your tiles.

Before you know it, you're done! Follow these instruction on how install ceramic wall tile, and don't forget that ceramic tiling takes some dedication and patience. Take your time and don't rush your work. When you install ceramic wall tile, the key is consistency and patience. Ceramic tiles that have been rushed will ruin your bathroom's overall look. A bathroom wall with ceramic tiles that run in haphazard inconsistent zigzag lines is not a beautiful thing to look at. And worse, it would only mean that you lack enthusiasm for what you're doing and that you haven't given it your effort.

Determining how much shine you want, just wipe off the excess glaze with a clean sweep. The brush should be cleaned with mineral oil and let dry before storing them for future use.

How to Choose a Rope Hammock - Cotton Or Polyester is Better?

There are a lot of choices out there when it comes to hammocks. Many people do not realize how many different fibers, styles, etc.. there are. One option is polyester or cotton. There are a few other blended options, but cotton and polyester are the two most popular, and the most commonly found. It is a hard choice, because each have their advantages and disadvantages. However, a few considerations may help sway a buyer one way or another.

Where is the hammock going to be located?

Cotton hammocks can not be exposed to prolonged direct sunlight. It will cause them to discolor. Whereas, a polyester hammock is resistant to the sun. Over time, even polyester may fade if placed in direct, or very hot sun locations. However, polyester can take much more sun, and for a longer period of time than cotton. So, for outdoor use, polyester wins the durability question.

Which is more comfortable?

Cotton gives under the weight of the body, and will eventually conform to the body. Cotton is a breathable material; meaning less sweat for the person using it. It is also softer to the touch. Polyester is not as comfortable, soft, or breathable. So, cotton wins the comfort test.

Which is more resistant to rain?

Again, if the hammock is inside, this is a moot question. If outside, cotton is prone to mildew, mold, and rotting from moisture or rain. Winter Weather and Your Water Pipes

If you live in a region that gets freezing weather, your water pipes are at risk of freezing in the winter. What's the big deal about frozen pipes other than the fact that you can't flush the toilets, brush your teeth, or take a shower? When water freezes, it expands which can cause the pipes to burst! And burst pipes lead to major water damage and costly repairs.

Because of the risk of significant water damage to your home, it pays to protect your pipes from the dangers of freezing temperatures. Below are some tips to protect your pipes from winter weather:

Insulate all exposed water pipes by wrapping them in pipe insulation. Pay attention to pipes in unheated areas such as the attic, garage, and basement.

Learn how to shut off power, gas, and water at their primary source as well as any local shutoff valves.

When the temperatures drop below freezing, keep your thermostat set to at least 55 degrees, even if you are away from home.

Caulk the entry points of any pipes where they enter the home. In the winter, close ventilation vents in the foundation to minimize cold drafts.
Drain and remove outdoor hoses before winter weather arrives. Shut off any separate valves for outdoor faucets and then drain those pipes by turning on the faucets.

For outdoor hose bibs without separate shutoff valves, insulate the pipes. Shut off the water supply to the outdoor sprinkler systems.

Indoor pipes that are located against interior walls need special care. Wrap these in pipe insulation and open cabinet doors to allow heat to circulate.

During sub-freezing temperatures, allow one faucet to drip cold water. This keeps water slowly circulating throughout the water pipes.

If a water pipe bursts, immediately turn off the main water to the house to minimize flooding.

If a pipe does burst, prompt action on your part is critical. After turning off the main water supply, some water will remain in the pipes and eventually make its way to the burst pipe. To minimize the amount of water that leaks out, start flushing toilets or running water (preferably downstream of the broken pipe) in an attempt to drain the water that's currently in your home's water pipes.

Once the water stops flowing, let the mopping up begin. You may have extensive water damage requiring the help of a water damage professional. In addition, structural repairs such as replacing damaged drywall or cabinetry may be required. Extensive water damage may require filing an insurance claim, depending on your coverages and deductible amount.

Contact a water damage company and your insurance agent to start the process right away because time is of the essence. Prompt repairs and completely drying the area ASAP are necessary for minimizing the damage and preventing an unpleasant side effect of burst pipes: mold.

As winter approaches each year, take the time to take care of your pipes. Preventing pipe bursts and water damage is well worth the effort.

If you live in a moist climate in the winter and a dry climate in the summer and you have exterior wood beams exposed to these elements. You could develop wood beam problems over time. If wood beams are properly maintained and painted often they could last for a long time. Wood beams can last many years if properly taken care of.

Exterior wood beams that are used to hold up roofs, patios and decking can suffer from wood rot if not taken care of. Let's take for example a wooden beam located in a patio holding up a section of a large roof. The span of the roof being is only 10 feet long. As we look at the exterior wood beam. We noticed the upper corner of the beam is soft and rotted.

The beam damage is roughly the size of a baseball. The wood beam itself is a 6 x 10. Do we need to replace this beam even though the damage is not real big. The answer to this question is yes, any amount of damage to a wood beam takes away from its structural strength.

If you have a wood beam holding up the roof and the beam fails you could end up replacing a large section of your roof as well as the damaged beam. Replacing the damaged beam is usually a difficult task. The beam is usually sandwiched between two walls and will have siding or stucco around it.

The biggest problem with exterior wood beams is that they are usually holding up large amounts of weight. If the beam is removed without the proper bracing and shoring of the roof or floor area you could have a larger problem than you started with.

Exterior beams over time seemed to develop large cracks or splits in dry weather. These large cracks and splits weaken the structural strength of the beam adding more stress to the beam itself leading to structural failure eventually.

Extreme climates where temperatures very over 40 in one day seem to suffer the most damage to exterior wood beams that are not properly maintained. Beam maintenance will require painting and keeping moisture away from them.

What to Look For When Choosing a Realtor

The real estate market has changed dramatically in the last few years. Gone are the days when everyone was related to a real estate professional. In the last 3 years, the number of Realtors in the Carson Valley and Carson City area has shrunk by 40%. So there are fewer to choose from, but how do you know whom to choose? What should you look for when hiring a Realtor?

In 2004, the Sierra Nevada Association of Realtors had almost 1,000 members. Every October, real estate professionals in the Carson City, Dayton Valley and Carson Valley area renew their memberships with the board. In October 2008, membership dropped to under 600 members. Now that the Northern Nevada real estate market has changed dramatically, many Realtors have left the industry. With the changes taking place in the market, those Realtors who endeavor to be successful have had to educate themselves - not only with technology advances - but with market changes such as how to effectively represent banks who own bank-owned REO homes in the area, to how to represent buyers when negotiating with a bank on a previously foreclosed home. Those Realtors who succeed in this market are trained specialists and worth talking to.

What can and should a seller expect from an Northern Nevada real estate professional today? Here is a list of things that are non-negotiable.

Web Exposure - The National Association of Realtors has reported that over eighty percent of homebuyers begin their home search online. There is more to having a strong internet presence than just creating a website. Do this little test. Go to Google or Yahoo and type in the name of a Realtor you are interviewing. Look at how many sites on the first and second page are directly related to that Realtor. Also, type in some key words for your area such as Carson Valley Real Estate and see how your Realtor ranks.

Speaking of the web, your home should be prominently featured in a Virtual Tour. This tour should showcase 60-100 images, showing your home as if the buyer was standing right there as they view it online. Speaking of advertising, another effective advertising technique is radio transmission. Ask your Realtor if they use a "Talking House" transmitter to advertise your home. This transmitter is placed in your home and a professionally recorded message is placed upon it up to 5 minutes in duration. This message describes your home to those people who drive by the home can listen to the recording any time of day or night. This is like having your real estate agent curbside 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The prospective buyer can obtain a great deal of information about the home from this recording. Alongside with the radio transmitter, the agent should have additional signage instructing the prospective buyer on which channel to tune into to hear the recording.

Direct Mail is a great method to expose your property to the market. A mail communication advising your closest 500 neighbors that your home is for sale is imperative. According to the National Association of Realtors, one in six homes is sold by a neighbor. This means that there are families living in the immediate vicinity who like where they live, and probably have friends who would like to live in the area as well. It is very important to make sure all the neighbors know the home is for sale.

Roller shades have been around for many years. Long ago in history many people had roller shades installed in their windows. Some of these roller shades still look quite beautiful. However it should be understood, and expected, that by now many of these roller shades that are in windows have deteriorated and gone by the wayside. Some of the wear and tear may be quite natural, including control systems that break down or fabrics that have ripped and torn or simply don't look right anymore. However, some roller shade fabrics can endure a slight repair, like sewing or other repair. Beware though, excessive sewing may lead to an expanded problem. Often times, the sewing of roller shade fabric will simply delay the inevitable- the entire destruction of their roller shade. In the end, it is usually advisable for consumers to begin thinking about replacing roller shades when this type of deterioration begins.

Some roller shades will cause damage to the surrounding area. The scraping of a roller shade bottom rail against a window frame is not uncommon. Sometimes, this bottom rail, also called a hem bar, will run into a wall or otherwise run into a window frame. This type of damage can usually be corrected by making slight changes to the bottom rail like cutting it with a saw. Sometimes this hitting into a wall is a sign of other problems. A roller shade that is not properly squared up may have other damage to the fabric at the controls at the top of the roller shade. It is important to make sure that the roller shade is rolling up properly and that there are no other damages to the fabric or the control system.

While many consumers would like to try to repair or update or otherwise renovate their roller shades, it is usually considered advisable for simple replacement of that one shade or the several with problems. The new control systems will help your shades last longer and look more beautiful for a longer period of time.

Repairing Scratches in Laminate Flooring

When I moved into my home, the floor in the living room had just been refinished with beautiful honey toned laminate flooring. It was beautiful and it fit my decor perfectly. The only problem was the fact that one of my chair had popped a cap, unbeknownst to everyone involved, and it wasn't until a few weeks later, when I went to rearrange a few pieces of furniture, that I noticed it. Much to my horror, the gleaming floor beneath the chair had become a scratched mess and I shuddered at the thought of having to fix them.

Now, I'm sure that I am not the only person who has had to deal with scratched laminate flooring. In fact, I'm almost positive that the problem is universally shared. The simple truth is, if you are going to own laminate flooring, at one time you will own scratched laminate flooring. Most people would simply sigh and shift the furniture around to cover the evidence, something that I actually did for a few months, but laminate flooring can be fixed without having to tear out pieces and replace them.

Most repairs in laminate flooring are pretty minor. A glass may have fallen and gouged a small hole or the kids may have scraped a toy car, minus wheels, across a small section. The scratches and holes are simply surface damage but they definitely detract from the once shiny beauty of your floors.

With minor damage, you will only need to do minor repairs to your laminate. Unfortunately, as with most repairs, there is nothing regularly stocked in your shelves that will fix the floors. You will need to make a run to the local home hardware or flooring store to pick up a repair kit. Some manufacturers will make repair kits for their flooring so the best place to start is the store where you purchased your flooring.

If you aren't sure of the manufacturer or the manufacturer does not have a repair product, simply purchase a generic repair kit. A repair kit usually consists of a tube of putty or wax. This is your actual filler. Some repair kits have colored putty while others have paint that you mix to create the matching floor color; this you mix with the putty before applying. Both are perfectly fine to purchase and you will usually run yourself about ten to twenty dollars.

Some repair kits come with putty knife and everything else you need but if it doesn't simply pick up a putty knife while you are at the store. Popsicle sticks work perfectly for applying the putty to the crack.

Before you start repairing your scratches and dents, make sure the area is clean of any debris and is dry. There is no sense repairing a spot if a patch of dog hair is going to be glued into the floor. Once the area is prepared, it's time to get mixing.

If you went with a colored putty that matches your floor, all you will need to do is spoon in the putty, but if you went with a mix, you will need to match and create the desired color. Once you have that, spoon in the putty and smooth with the putty knife. Remove any of the excess putty so you have a smooth surface. Lastly, wipe the area around the scratch, being careful to not touch the repaired scratch with a clean cloth to wash away any residue.

Once it dries, your laminate flooring should look as good as new.

Sometimes, you will find the occasional scratch that is too shallow for the putty to work properly. If this is the case, the best product on the market is ScratchAway. So with a few little tricks of the trade, there are very few reasons why you can't enjoy scratch free laminate flooring for years to come.
